What is DFM & Mold Flow Analysis?
At Xiamen Creator Technology, DFM (Design for Manufacturability) is the first step of every project. Whether your part will be CNC machined, injection molded, or die cast, our engineering team reviews your 3D files before any tooling or machining begins. We identify risks, propose modifications, and simulate the process so your project launches right the first time.
CNC Machining DFM Checklist
CNC parts have different constraints than molded parts. Our DFM review for CNC covers:
Inside Corner Radius — Every internal corner must accommodate a round cutting tool. We flag sharp 90° inside corners and recommend practical radii (typically ≥0.5mm / 0.02").
Tool Accessibility & Depth-to-Diameter — Deep narrow pockets may require long tools that deflect or break. We flag aspect ratios exceeding 4:1 and suggest design adjustments or alternative approaches such as EDM or stepped features.
Thin-Wall Stability — Walls thinner than 0.8mm in aluminum or 1.0mm in steel may chatter or deform during cutting. We recommend minimum wall thicknesses per material.
Standard Threads & Tolerances — We verify that tapped holes use standard thread forms (M3–M12, #4–1/4-20) and that tolerance callouts are achievable on our 3-axis and 5-axis equipment.
Clamping & Workholding — Parts must have flat reference surfaces and accessible clamp zones. We flag features that would require expensive custom fixtures.
Surface Finish vs. Cost — We advise whether your specified Ra (for example Ra 0.8 vs Ra 3.2) is necessary for each surface, helping you avoid over-machining and reduce cost.
Injection Molding DFM Checklist
Wall Thickness Uniformity — Consistent thickness (typically 1.0–3.0mm for ABS/PC) prevents sink marks, voids, and warpage.
Draft Angles — 1° to 3° per side on vertical walls ensures clean ejection without drag marks.
Rib & Boss Design — Rib thickness at 60% or less of nominal wall; boss gussets added to prevent sink on the opposite side.
Gate & Ejector Placement — Optimized to minimize weld lines, flow marks, and cosmetic defects on visible surfaces.
Undercuts & Lifters — Identified early. We propose side-actions, collapsible cores, or design changes to avoid costly mold complexity.
Mold Flow Simulation
For injection-molded parts, we run Mold Flow Analysis to predict and prevent defects before the steel is cut:
Filling Pattern & Pressure Drop — Confirms the part fills completely without over-packing.
Weld Line & Air Trap Locations — Identifies cosmetic and structural weak points.
Shrinkage & Warpage Prediction — Ensures flatness and dimensional accuracy after ejection and cooling.
Cooling Channel Optimization — Balanced cooling reduces cycle time and part variation.
When Do You Need Which?
CNC-Only Parts — DFM review provided free with every quote. Complex 5-axis or tight-tolerance jobs may include a brief simulation note.
Injection Molded Parts — Simple geometries receive a free DFM summary with the mold quote. Complex parts (multi-cavity, thin-wall, optical, medical) get a full Mold Flow report.
Die Casting Parts — DFM covers draft, wall thickness, and venting. Mold Flow available on request for large or critical castings.
Our Integrated Engineering Workflow
DFM is built into every project at Xiamen Creator Technology. Our process:
Client uploads STEP or IGES file with material specification.
Engineering reviews DFM within 24 hours.
DFM feedback, Mold Flow summary (if applicable), and quotation are returned together.
Client approves and tooling or machining begins.
We operate under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016 certified systems, with CMM inspection and FAIR available on every shipment.
Upload your CAD file today — get DFM feedback and a quote within 24 hours.
